TANZANIA EDUCATION

AUTHORITY (TEA)

TEA’s Mandate

In 2001, Parliament passed the famous Education Fund Act ( No. 8 of 2001 ). Tanzania Education Authority is a corporate body established under Section 5 (1) of the said Parliamentary Act to manage the Education Fund. In a nutshell, TEA’s primary role is to promote equity in education and to raise the quality of education provided by the different education providers. Its central focus is on improving infrastructural facilities.

Functions and Objectives

According to Section 6 of the Education Fund Act, the objectives and functions of TEA are:

  1. To secure adequate and stable financing of education;
  2. To advise the Government on new sources of revenue for the purpose of ensuring adequate and stable flow of money into the Fund;
  3. To raise the quality of education and increase access and equity;
  4. To promote education and training according to needs within the framework of overall national and socio-economic development plans and policies;
  5. To apply the money deposited to the Fund for purposes of improvement and promotion of education;
  6. To develop and review periodically the formula for allocation and disbursement from the Fund to the different educational levels;
  7. To monitor the use of the funds disbursed and ensure adherence to the objectives of the Fund;
  8. To sponsor and provide facilities for higher learning and to establish relationship or association with institutions both nationally and internationally.

TEA’s Achievements

Perhaps the greatest achievement of TEA so far is the enormous goodwill and support it clearly enjoys from education providers and the general public at large. In the short span of its existence, this corporate body has demonstrated its deep commitment to promoting quality education in Tanzania. Probably, what has endeared TEA to most people is the fairness and transparency of all its transactions. TEA has so far financially supported a wide range of projects from secondary schools to universities, both, public and private. TEA has also registered remarkable successes in mobilising funds from sources other than the government.
